Rebellion

Open with prayer.

Father ,as we come before you this day to learn of you and to look into your word, help us to have ears that hear and eyes that see. Father let the words of this message settle down into the hearts of the hearers that it may bless them, edify them comfort them and exhort all who will hear. Prepare the hearts of those who will hear it. Let your purpose in this message be fulfilled and may it ever abide in the hearts of those who are able to receive it. Amen

How many of you know God knows just how to push your buttons?

My experience: A man of God once spoke to me, by the Spirit of God and he said to me,

“If all you ever see is an angry and cruel God then that is all you will ever have.”

I didn’t understand it at the time and it made me mad when he said it. It definitely pushed my buttons and got me to thinking. I had just enough pride in me that I was determined I wasn’t going to let that happen. I was better than that. I was sure of it. I was certain that I Loved God far too much to always see him that way, although there were times when I had thought of God as being cruel for allowing so much hardship to come my way.

My life had been one of abuse and hardship from the time that I was young. Little did I know that the following years would be some of the most trying fiery times I would experience and there were times when I did look at God as though his heart toward me was uncaring and cold. How wrong I was.

I was told that God loved me when I was very young, but it seemed like it took forever for it to really settle down in my heart. When I was five years old an uncle of mine who was a Baptist preacher called me to him one day and he said to me I have something to show you. He had a bible with him and he showed me the verse in John 3:16. You know the one we’re all so familiar with, that tells us of how God so loved the world that he sent Jesus. Well I thank God for that little verse because there were days that the only thing that kept me going was the hope that I had, that just maybe , what if somehow it was true. Maybe God really did love me although I just couldn’t see it. I couldn’t understand how a God who loved me so much would allow such great suffering in my life. But what did I know about Love, especially the love of God?

I looked back on that day when I was five many times throughout the years, always wondering if God Loves me then why all this. I am one of those analytical sorts always looking to find the answers, even to the questions most people don’t bother to ask. The following is what I found.

Rebellion manifests it’s self in a lot of different ways

We think of a rebel as being one who openly defiantly and aggressively opposes authority; And while it is true that those who do such things are in obvious rebellion to the authority of God there are yet many differing manifestations of rebellion. I want to point out a few of those.

Rebellion

Turn with me to

1Samuel 15: 1 ¶ Samuel also said unto Saul, The LORD sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the LORD.  2 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt. 3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.  4 And Saul gathered the people together, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah. 5 And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley.  6 And Saul said unto the Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. 7 And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest to Shur, that is over against Egypt. 8 And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. 9 But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.  10 ¶ Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, saying, 11 It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night. 12 And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal. 13 And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the LORD: I have performed the commandment of the LORD. 14 And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear? 15 And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed. 16 Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on. 17 And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel? 18 And the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.  19 Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the LORD? 20 And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

(Saul does not even see his own rebellion and disobedience.)

21 But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal. 22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. 23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king. (Saul is shown his disobedience) 24 ¶ And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice. 25 Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD. 26 And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel. 27 And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent. 28 And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou. 29 And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent.  30 Then he said, I have sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD thy God. 31 So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped the LORD. 32 ¶ Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came unto him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past. 33 And Samuel said, As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal. 34 Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul. 35 And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.(KJV)

We see in verse 17 that there was a time in Saul’s life that he was little in his own sight but having become king he saw himself as a great king ;one in authority and not one under authority. How quickly we forget those who have the rule over us when we think upon our own greatness. Pride had settled into his heart.

Pride is the root of rebellion…… Some times we think we can do it better than God. Sometimes we think God just doesn’t understand. It is amazing how quickly we can lose perspective of who we are in comparison to God.

On many occasions I have wondered how it was that Lucifer could have forgotten that he was a created being and believed he could oust God from the throne. Yet we see in

Isaiah 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!  13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

Ezekiel 28:14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. 15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. 16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. 17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee. 18 Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.It is obvious Satan is not content with his position that has been given him. He is lifted up in pride and seeks to take the throne .He has forgotten his maker. He thinks he has a better way. He has forgotten who he is. His eyes are blinded with pride, and he becomes discontent with the position or the state where in he is.
As sinners saved by grace often times we forget the grace of God that verily preserves our lives. We lose perspective of Gods greatness and of the true state we are in. We mumble and we grumble when trouble comes our way forgetting that it is by the very grace of God that the ground beneath our feet doesn’t swallow us up. We get caught up in the cares of the world and before we know it we find our selves murmuring and complaining and sometimes even angry with God, discontented with the state we are in.

 Discontentment Anger and Bitterness

Discontentment anger and bitterness ,all stem from the belief that something is not the way it should be. Often times we become angry about the situations in our lives. The fiery trials that we must often face are difficult. Sometimes they are very grievous and utterly painful. It is sometimes terribly hard to settle down and to allow God to have his perfect will in our lives especially when we go through hot fiery trials that we often don’t understand.

We need to be still and know that HE is God. He is still in control. Still on the throne and he is able to bring to pass all that he has ever spoken to us.

Psalm 46:1 ¶ <<To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, A Song upon Alamoth.>> God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;  3 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. 4 There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. 5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.  6 ¶ The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted. 7 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.  8 Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the earth. 9 He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire. 10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. 11 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. (KJV)

At times it’s hard to see God’s purpose in the things we suffer. Sometimes we don’t even realize that God’s hand is in the matter. Often times all we can see is that it appears as though things are not going our way, the way we want it to go. We may even go so far as to feel forgotten and to think that God has forsaken us and to wonder about the why of it all.

Heb 13:17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you. (KJV)

Rebellious Types:

 1) Some go to many extremes to show their rebellion as though somehow they think they can “get back at God” for the supposed cruelty that he has shown them..

2) There are those who become obviously rebellious to God because of the trials and tribulations that are suffered. And then there are those who passively resist and oppose God

3) Then there are those who think that they are being obedient yet misunderstand.

Those who murmur and grumble and continue to try to do things their way, seeking their own will , and never really being content in the state that they are in. These are they who desire at times to serve God but just never seem to really get there. Never satisfied , always struggling against their circumstances and whose eyes are often unable to se the hand of God in the matter. Often in life we go through difficulties not knowing the “why” of it all for a season then after ward look back and in hindsight we see God’s purpose in it all. One such person comes to mind. The Aposlte Paul.Paul was told he would testify of the Lord in Rome, afterward he went through many hardships which eventually lead him to Rome to appeal to Ceaser regarding the accusations that were made toward him.

Look at what he says in 2 Corinthians 11:23 Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft. 24 Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one. 25 Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; 26 In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; 27 In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness. 28 Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches. 29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not? 30 If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities. 31 The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is blessed for evermore, knoweth that I lie not. 32 In Damascus the governor under Aretas the king kept the city of the Damascenes with a garrison, desirous to apprehend me: 33 And through a window in a basket was I let down by the wall, and escaped his hands. (KJV)

Paul Said in…..

Phillipians4:4 Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. 5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. 6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.  9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you. 10 ¶ But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity.  11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. 12  I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

We see Paul had to learn this lesson. It wasn’t something that just came to him naturally. Our natural man wants to have it our way and it resists by nature the things of God.

Romans8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.  7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.  8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

Rebellion: is often the result of one endeavoring to have things be the way we think they should be, when such ways are contrary to authority. Or to have one's own way. Godliness with contentment.

1Ti 6:6 ¶ But godliness with contentment is great gain.(KJV)

Look again at

Phillipians 4:11  Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.  12  I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.  13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

I remember a time when God used a prophet to speak a word over me concerning God’s intentions in my life. The prophet spoke marvelous words to me about how my life had been one crisis after another but that God was going to change all that. and how God was going to strengthen me. He spoke of God putting steel in my back and how God was going to strengthen me like steel. It sounded so wonderful. I was on cloud nine about God doing things in my life. I was excited that God would want to bless me at all. I thought oh how wonderful it would be to be strong.

A short time later on another occasion God used this same man and he spoke to me about how God was going to make me to have me hinds feet in high places and I was going to be able to walk steadfastly in places that appeared quite difficult and that the day would come when I would embrace it as a challenge. Within this same general span of time God used another man to speak to me about a storm that was coming in my life.  Then again within this same span he sent one to tell me about how I need to be patient and obedient. God confirmed all these things with visions and dreams and others who prophesied over my life. I watched as it all began to unfurl. The storm came and my heart was broken. But I thank God for it. In this storm I learned to trust God and found a peace I had never known. Life is no longer one crisis after another but it is now a challenge.

Somebody not long ago told me I was a woman of great faith. I thought for a moment how God increases our faith and stretches us, I thought to say something more on the mater but refrained and remained silent just thinking on it all. It isn't so much that I have great faith, it is more that I have a great God and it is in him that I trust.

Depression sadness anger bitterness is often the result of our not allowing ourselves to be content with what we have or what state or situation we are in. When we are so determined to have things our way that we war and struggle against God to have what we want rather than seeking Gods will we find we are so focused on our own fleshly desires that we’ve completely lost interest in what God wants and along with it our peace.

When we have no peace in our lives, it often begins with discontent. What does it mean to be discontent? It means to not be satisfied with the way things are. Discontentment and rebellion comes when we don’t put our trust in God and allow our self to be conformed to his will, when our minds and hearts are set on having things our way and not his. We find that our peace is gone from us and we wonder why?

Have you really made him Lord over your life? How we love to sing the songs about the cleansing refiners fire. Change my heart oh God, but when the winds of change comes we cry for mercy and we struggle against God.

We often times hear of folks giving God praises for the “niceties of life” the new job, new car , a physical healing , financial blessings etc. But how often do we praise God for the hard things he has in his infinite wisdom brought us through. How often do give God the praise for the things he has purged from our lives?

We need to be submitted to God and trust in his ability to bring us to the place he would have us to be and be willing to go there, but rather we seek to do things our way refusing to submit to Gods authority and not  yielding to his prompting nor seeking his purpose. We lean to our own understanding. We have not learned to be content. Instead we are contentious. Often stiff necked and rebellious, we struggle against God looking on him as though he was just a cruel God who lacks concern for us in our time of need. This mindset of blaming God and looking on him as though he were just picking on us is a mindset of rebellion that steals the blessings God would have us to have.

How many of you know God loves us too much to leave us in the shape we are in. We come to God full of sinful ways and unable to help our selves. Lost sheep who have fallen in the mirey clay. God takes us from the miry clay from the bondages that we’ve gotten our selves into along life’s journey and he begins a process to cleanse and purge from us those things which are not like him.

Why? Because he loves us.

Hebrews 12:3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. 4 ¶ Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. 5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: 6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. 7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? 8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.

He moves upon our lives  to correct us and to teach us to trust him so we will know our lives are securely in his hand. Gods desire is that we enter in to his rest, to be at peace knowing that God is able to change our lives to heal us and to deliver us.God has a plan for each of our lives and he is well able to carry it out.

Remember Paul. God could have taken Paul and just supernaturally transported Paul to Rome. Why didn’t he? It didn’t fulfill his purpose. Look at all that was accomplished along the way. Over two thirds of the New Testament was written from a Roman jail. Paul was strengthened and learned to be content in whatsoever state he was in. The wiles and the fiery darts that the enemy uses to destroy with became of no effect.

 The bibles promise to us.

Ro 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.(KJV

The rest comes in knowing that what ever God has planned for our lives he is able to do. Let us now surrender all to Gods hand and be at rest and allow our selves to be content in whatsoever state we are in. Let us cease from striving against the Lord in rebellious attitudes and mindsets and seek to do his will that we may have peace in our hearts and minds.

Ephesians6:10Finally my brethren be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might.

Proverbs 3:1 ¶ My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: 2 For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.  3 Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: 4 So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.  5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. 7 ¶ Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. 8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.  9 Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: 10 So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine. 11 My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: 12 For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth. 13 ¶ Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.  14 For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. 15 She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. 16 Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour. 17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. 18 She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her. 19 The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.  20 By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew. 21 ¶ My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion: 22 So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck. 23 Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble. 24 When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet. 25 Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh. 26 For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken. 27 ¶ Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.  28 Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee. 29 Devise not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee.  30 Strive not with a man without cause, if he have done thee no harm. 31 Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.  32 For the froward is abomination to the LORD: but his secret is with the righteous. 33 The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just. 34 Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly. 35 The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools. (KJV)

What is required of thee ?

Mic 6:8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

Mt 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.(KJV
