The Heart of Integrity
Proverbs 4:23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the
issues of life.
Deuteronomy6:5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy
God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. 6
And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
What we need to posses in our lives is a firm holding
to codes of right behavior and the guidance of a high sense of honor and
duty that comes from doing that which is pleasing in the sight of God.
Samuel sent to anoint a new king.
Mankind
typically looks to the outward appearance and rarely upon the heart.
Especially in todays world appearances make all the difference where man
kind is concerned but what does God look for? What personality traits or
characteristics does God desire to see in us?
Lets look at a few of the characteristics God desires
to instill and see in us. We can find some of them in David.
Turn with me please to
1Samuel 16:1
1Samuel 16:1 ¶ And the LORD said unto Samuel,
How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning
over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the
Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons. 2 And Samuel
said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the LORD said,
Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the LORD. 3
And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do:
and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee. 4 And Samuel
did that which the LORD spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the
town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably? 5 And he
said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD: sanctify yourselves,
and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and
called them to the sacrifice. 6 ¶ And it came to pass, when they were come,
that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD'S anointed is before him.
7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the
height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as
man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh
on the heart. 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before
Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this. 9 Then Jesse made
Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this. 10
Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said
unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these. 11 And Samuel said unto
Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the
youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto
Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither. 12
And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful
countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him:
for this is he. 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the
midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon.
God did not choose the one who was strongest in his
flesh. He chose the one who was strong in his heart, the one who possessed
the characteristics God was looking for.
The Scriptures tell us in 1Samuel 16:7 that God
looks upon the heart of man.
The bible tells us that David was a man after Gods
own heart.
Ac 13:22 And when he had removed him, he raised up
unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said,
I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which
shall fulfil all my will.(KJV)
What made David a man after Gods own heart?
As far as I can see the bible doesnt tell us just what
it is that makes David a man after Gods own heart but it speaks of David as
being one who will do the will of God . It is my belief that it was a number
of things that God had birthed into the heart of David.
David was a man who had great character. Personality is
what we say about ourselves, and what we allow others to see, Character is
who we are when nobody is looking.
In looking at David we see a man who is
1) a man of integrity,
2) a man who is humble and
3) a man who worships God greatly. We see him continue to give God
praise and honor. 4) We see he is faithful to come to God.
5) David knows that all his success depends upon God.
Integrity: What is integrity?
Integrity is an inner strength that is contained in the
heart of a man or woman of God who desires to do that which is pleasing to
God and is committed in their hearts to hold fast to that which is right
even in the face of temptation and adversity.

even when we are betrayed.
Integrity
In Psalm 26 we see David speaking of
integrity.
Psalm 26:1 ¶ <<A Psalm of David.>> Judge me, O
LORD; for I have walked in mine integrity: I have trusted also in the LORD;
therefore I shall not slide. 2 Examine me, O LORD, and prove me; try my
reins and my heart. 3 For thy lovingkindness is before mine eyes: and I have
walked in thy truth. 4 I have not sat with vain persons, neither will I go
in with dissemblers. 5 I have hated the congregation of evil doers; and will
not sit with the wicked. 6 ¶ I will wash mine hands in innocency: so will I
compass thine altar, O LORD: 7 That I may publish with the voice of
thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works. 8 LORD, I have loved the
habitation of thy house, and the place where thine honour dwelleth. 9
Gather not my soul with sinners, nor my life with bloody men: 10 In whose
hands is mischief, and their right hand is full of bribes. 11 But as for
me, I will walk in mine integrity: redeem me, and be merciful unto me. 12 My
foot standeth in an even place: in the congregations will I bless the
LORD.(KJV)
Ps 7:8 The LORD shall judge the people: judge me, O
LORD, according to my righteousness, and according to mine integrity that is
in me.
Pr 20:7 ¶ The just man walketh in his integrity: his
children are blessed after him.(KJV)
Humility:
Pr 15:33 ¶ The fear of the LORD is the
instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.
Before honor is humility, Why? Because God resists the
proud and gives grace to the humble.
1Pe 5:5 ¶ Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto
the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with
humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. (KJV)
2 Samuel : 1 ¶ And it came to pass, after the
year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent
Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the
children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at
Jerusalem. 2 And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from
off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof
he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look
upon. 3 And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not
this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? 4 And
David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay
with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto
her house. 5 And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I
am with child. 6 ¶ And David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the
Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David. 7 And when Uriah was come unto him,
David demanded of him how Joab did, and how the people did, and how the war
prospered. 8 And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy
feet. And Uriah departed out of the king's house, and there followed him a
mess of meat from the king. 9 But Uriah slept at the door of the king's
house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house. 10
And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house,
David said unto Uriah, Camest thou not from thy journey? why then didst thou
not go down unto thine house? 11 And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and
Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my
lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to
eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul
liveth, I will not do this thing. 12 And David said to Uriah, Tarry here to
day also, and to morrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem
that day, and the morrow. 13 And when David had called him, he did eat and
drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on
his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house. 14 ¶
And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and
sent it by the hand of Uriah. 15 And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye
Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that
he may be smitten, and die. 16 And it came to pass, when Joab observed the
city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that valiant men
were. 17 And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there
fell some of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died
also.
DAVID REBUKED
2Samuel 12: 1
¶ And the LORD sent Nathan unto
David. And he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one
city; the one rich, and the other poor. 2 The rich man had exceeding many
flocks and herds: 3 But the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb,
which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and
with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own cup, and
lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter. 4 And there came a
traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of
his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come unto him; but
took the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him.5
And David's anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to
Nathan, As the LORD liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely
die: 6 And he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing,
and because he had no pity. 7 And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man.
Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I
delivered thee out of the hand of Saul; 8 And I gave thee thy master's
house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of
Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have
given unto thee such and such things. 9 Wherefore hast thou despised the
commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the
Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast
slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. 10 Now therefore the
sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me,
and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife. 11 Thus saith
the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house,
and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy
neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun. 12 For
thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and
before the sun. 13 And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the
LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou
shalt not die. 14 Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great
occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is
born unto thee shall surely die.
What is humility?
1 : not proud or haughty : not
arrogant or assertive
2 : reflecting, expressing, or offered in a spirit of
deference or submission
We see David was Humble
Davids heart was a humble heart.
He was not too proud to admit his sin.
He was not too proud to acknowledge his need.
He was not too proud to accept responsibility for the wrong he had done.
Humility :
a willingness to see ones own
faults, too look at ones self in truth and to admit ones own short comings.
David Worships the Lord :
2Samuel 12: 15 ¶ And Nathan departed unto his
house. And the LORD struck the child that Uriah's wife bare unto David, and
it was very sick. 16 David therefore besought God for the child; and David
fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth. 17 And the elders of
his house arose, and went to him, to raise him up from the earth: but he
would not, neither did he eat bread with them. 18 And it came to pass on the
seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell
him that the child was dead: for they said, Behold, while the child was yet
alive, we spake unto him, and he would not hearken unto our voice: how will
he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead? 19 But when
David saw that his servants whispered, David perceived that the child was
dead: therefore David said unto his servants, Is the child dead? And they
said, He is dead. 20 Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and
anointed himself, and changed his apparel, and came into the house of the
LORD, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he required,
they set bread before him, and he did eat. 21 Then said his servants
unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou didst fast and weep
for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst
rise and eat bread. 22 And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted
and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether GOD will be gracious to me, that
the child may live? 23 But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I
bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me. 24
And David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with
her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon: and the LORD loved
him.
David doesnt run form God when he is in error he
runs to God. His heart is truly to please God and to do that which is right
in his sight.
Psalm 51: 1 ¶ <<To the chief Musician, A
Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in
to Bathsheba.>> Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness:
according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my
transgressions. 2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from
my sin. 3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before
me. 4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy
sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when
thou judgest. 5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother
conceive me. 6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in
the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. 7 ¶ Purge me with
hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8
Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may
rejoice. 9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. 10
Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11
Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free
spirit. 13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be
converted unto thee. 14 ¶ Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God
of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness. 15 O
Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. 16 For
thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in
burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a
contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. 18 Do good in thy good
pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem. 19 Then shalt thou be
pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole
burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar. (KJV)
God uses Broken things.
(Vance Havner quote ...."It takes broken soil to produce a crop, broken clouds
to produce rain, broken grain to give bread and broken bread to give
strength.
It was a broken perfume box that gave off a fragrance
one day in the life of Jesus.
It was a broken apostle Peter, weeping bitterly, who
returns to greater power and effectiveness than he ever could have
imagined. Brokenness is the surrender of our heart, mind and body
to Christ. Brokenness is what we allow God to make of us.")
The End.
