Giant Slayers Continued :

48 ¶ And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.  49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. 50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David. 51 Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.

( The Strongman that was so feared was defeated and those under him fled )

52 And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron. 53 And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents. 54 And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent. 55 And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell. 56 And the king said, Enquire thou whose son the stripling is. 57 And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand. 58 And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.(KJV)

1.      Verse 15 David was trained and relied on his past experiences and training to encourage him. As a shepherd David learned the skills need in defending the sheep. Just as he defended his fathers sheep in the wilderness so also he defended his Heavenly Father’s sheep (Israel) Because of his obedience and trust in God the entire nation of Israel was kept from falling into slavery and bondage to the Phillistines.

2.      Verse 4 and in verse 23- 26 David sized up his enemy.

3.      Verse 28 David resisted the taunting of his Brother Eliab.

4.      Verse32 David made a conscious decision to Serve God no matter the cost, no matter the adversity.

5.      Verse 33 David resisted the discouragement that Saul spoke to him.

6.      Verse 37(he remembered the times when he overcame the lion and the bear, and how God  had    delivered him from their hand)

7.      Verse39David put off Saul’s armour and cast away the protection that the things of man could give him, not trusting in man’s protection

8.      Verse 44 David did no give in to the voice of his enemy instead David Put his trust in God

9.   Verse 45 David Goes forth in the name of the Lord

45Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.( He Stands Up For God )

10.  Verse 46 David Gives God the Glory   46.This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.  47 And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD'S, and he will give you into our hands.

11.   Verse 48 David confronted his Giant and did not run from it. David didn’t run from the giant he faced him. All of his 3 older brothers and all the men of Israel’s army had fled from before the face of Goliath but here is young David knowing the giant, the problem he faces is much greater than him self.

12.  Verse 49 David made use of the weapons God had provided.

He chooses five smooth stones. In biblical days smooth stones were used like we use toilet paper. LOL I thought it interesting to note that Goliath was killed by such a stone as one would commonly use for such. Note also that David had selected five smooth stones one for each of Goliaths four other brothers.

PER 2 Samuel 21:21 and 1 Chronciles 20:5

Some have likened the five smooth stones as being a type and shadow of the five fold ministry, and the river they were drawn out of as being a type and shadow of the Holy Spirit.

13.  Verse 51 David took authority ( he cut off Goliaths head with his own sword )  The head represents authority.

The very thing Goliath intended to use to kill David with, David took and used to cut off Goliath’s head. His enemy became meat for him, or you could say his enemies had become a help to him.

14.  Verse 54 David took his enemies weapons and his armour. He disarmed his enemy. Those things which the enemy meant for harm are now a help to David. Later in David’s life he uses them to defend himself.

15.  David has defeated the strong man in his life and now the enemy that was with him flee from before him. Mark 3:27 No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house.

16.  David celebrated the victory
